Updates From the Centre County Historical SocietyFrom the President's Corner - Spring 2011 Posted Monday, April 11, 2011 Snowflakes melt alone – but together they can be traffic stoppers ![]() After a long winter, this anonymous quote seems like a good metaphor, not only for the past few months, but also to acknowledge the Centre County Historical Society's combination of traffic stopping, merged "snowflakes." These are the folks who are actively involved in its nearly twenty committees. More than 100 people provide that traffic-stopping momentum each year by actively participating on a regular basis to help carry out the society's many activities. Committee member involvement ranges from serving as docents at the Centre Furnace Mansion and the Boogersburg School, to planning and working in the gardens or with the collections. Still others are regularly involved in providing ideas and arranging for programs, exhibits, and publications. Several offer their time and expertise on issues related to the preservation of the county's historic sites, communities and landscapes, or closer to home the care and maintenance of the mansion and school properties. And, because these many activities also require a strong financial base and ongoing support, some committee members are focused on development and long range planning, including the initiation and carrying out of fundraising events. As the temperatures began to rise and lonely snowflakes begin to melt, we sincerely hope that you will consider becoming a proactive and productive CCHS traffic stopper by joining one of these committees: Docents, Gardeners, Education, Collections, Historic Preservation, Property, Program, Publications, Exhibits, Membership, Budget and Finance, Long Range Planning. These are cordial gatherings with the coffee pot usually on, and Klondike bars offered when the weather turns warm. A call to (814) 234-4779 or e-mail to Mary Sorensen is all you need to do to get the (snow) ball rolling. ~ Jackie Melander |
